Codfish Architecture

Codfish Architecture

What is the architecture of cod? Obviously, a fish doesn't build buildings, but its biological characteristics generate architecture. This book explores this hypothesis and focuses on the Portuguese coast to understand the dynamic relationships between terrestrial construction and the dynamic instability of marine ecosystems.

Looking at the 19th and 20th centuries, a time when the industrialisation of fisheries drove major transformations on land and at sea, the constructions and territories associated with cod, sardines, tuna, hake, octopus, gurnard, and monkfish are scrutinised.

Through various lenses, from animal biology to fishing and fish processing technologies, from politics to consumption practices, it is possible to understand the extent to which fish shaped the construction of the landscape and territory and, in parallel, how this transformation increased ecological pressure on the sea.
