The Plants of Brazil
The Plants of Brazil
The Scientific and Artistic Rescue of Brazilian Flora in the Overseas Archives
"Plants of Brazil", authored by the renowned researcher José Eduardo Mendes Ferrão, is a work of immeasurable historical, scientific, and aesthetic value. This work presents a detailed taxonomic and utilitarian study of watercolor prints of plants and specimens preserved in two of Portugal's largest archives: the Overseas Historical Archive (IICT) and the Library of the Museum and Botanical Garden of the University of Lisbon.
The great differential of this edition was the discovery, in the Overseas Historical Archive, of the original 18th/19th-century manuscript that should have accompanied the botanical illustrations on their journey to Lisbon. The author offers readers a full palaeographical reading of this unpublished document, deciphering the historical annotations on the virtues and uses of the plants.
