NAUTICAL ASTROLABE
NAUTICAL ASTROLABE
Nautical instrument adapted by Portuguese navigators
Sail through history with its treasures.
The nautical astrolabe was used to determine the latitude of a ship at sea, by positioning the sun with the horizon line. This beautiful reproduction is based on the "Valentia" nautical astrolabe, so named because it was found on this Irish island. The original, found among the spoils of Philip II's Armada (16th century), can be seen at the National Maritime Museum, in Greenwich.
