Belém Royal Pier and Pedra Pier at Terreiro do Paço
Belém Royal Pier and Pedra Pier at Terreiro do Paço
The following are discussed and illustrated:
- The various quays, designed and/or built in
stone, in Terreiro do Paço before the great earthquake
of 1755, from the reign of D. Manuel, including the plans
drawn up by Carlos Mardel and Custódio Vieira;
- The plans of D. João V for the riverside area of
Lisbon, from Xabregas to Belém, including the project
by architect Carlos Mardel, partially implemented;
- The quay, similar to the Cais das Colunas, built
in Belém, opposite the current Belém Palace, two
years before the earthquake and demolished at the end of the 19th century;
- The works on the new port of Lisbon, a project launched by
D. Luís in October 1887.
This is a prelude to the monographic book about Cais
das Colunas – which will cover Lisbon rebuilt by
Pombal/D. José I, D. Maria I and D. João VI.
- Includes unpublished illustrations and the transcription, in an appendix,
of archive sources also never before
published.
