Letters from Tibet
Letters from Tibet
In 1624, António de Andrade, a Jesuit priest on a mission in India, arrived for the first time in the kingdom of Guge, in Western Tibet. It was a historic journey that marked the beginning of contact between Europe and the Tibetan people. Letters from Tibet brings together the travel narratives of the Portuguese missionary, a native of Oleiros, who crossed one of the world's highest mountain ranges on his way to a then completely unknown kingdom. Founder of the first Catholic mission in Tibet, António de Andrade left in his letters a precious historical, cultural, religious, and geographical record, now published in its entirety for the first time.
