D. Carlos (1863-1908)
D. Carlos (1863-1908)
D. Carlos, the penultimate King of Portugal, lived between 1863 and 1908. He was considered one of the greatest diplomats of his time, as recognised by countries such as England, Brazil, France, Germany, and the United States. In addition to his royal duties, he also dedicated himself to painting and oceanography. We seek to describe his life, highlighting the main facts of the assassination. He was assassinated in Terreiro de Paço, upon his return from Vila Viçosa. This assassination was never clarified because great interests were at stake. We will, as far as possible, provide clues that lead to some conclusions.
Of this king, so contested by some, Homem Cristo, a former monarchist and former republican of that time, said: "The king - we will always insist on saying - had flaws. But amidst his flaws, he was the most intelligent politician of his time and the only one, of all, who had character. The only one!"
