Frigate D. Fernando II e Glória - Restoration and Recovery
Frigate D. Fernando II e Glória - Restoration and Recovery
"(...) Portugal, par excellence a seafaring nation, (...) has a 19th-century frigate, one of only four in existence.
The "D. Fernando II e Glória", the last ship to be built at the Royal Arsenal of Damão, was also the last ship of the Portuguese Navy to sail exclusively under sail and the last to complete the India Run.
(...) After its partial destruction in the 1963 fire, it was only in 1990 that the restoration of the ship could begin with the widespread support of the Portuguese people, now well aware of the need to save this unique example of their historical and cultural heritage.
(...) Dr. Manuel Leitão and Commander Ferdinando Oliveira Simões (...) now present a work (...) of great technical rigor and a depth rarely achieved in works of this nature (...)"
