History of the Portuguese Navy - Voyages and Naval Operations (1668-1823)

History of the Portuguese Navy - Voyages and Naval Operations (1668-1823)

The History of the Portuguese Navy is a project that began to be conceived in 1991 and was approved at the Assembly of Academicians in 1994. The current version comprises a matrix scheme with four central themes: "Ships, Seamen and the Art of Navigation", "Ports and Maritime Trade", "Men, Doctrine and Organization" and "Voyages and Naval Operations" and four distinct temporal periods - 1139 to 1499, 1500 to 1668, 1669 to 1823 and 1824 to 1974. The publication of the current volume "Voyages and Naval Operations (1668-1823)" is the tenth work to be published, out of a total of 18.

The period covered by this work invites us to explore a period in the history of Portugal that is often reduced to the dazzling Brazilian gold and an idea of Portugal's subordination to its old ally England. However, starting with the peace with Castile after the Restoration, going through the golden period of royal absolutism and the old regime and ending with the transatlantic crossing of the court to Brazil, this is in fact a time rich in events worthy of study and attention.
