Nocturlabe Girolamo della Volpaia
Nocturlabe Girolamo della Volpaia
A tribute to the genius of astronomical navigation that guided centuries of maritime exploration.
Long before the invention of modern mechanical clocks, sailors and astronomers observed the night sky to tell time. This elegant Nautical Nocturnal is inspired by the legendary model built in 1568 by the Florentine master Girolamo della Volpaia, one of the most prestigious artisans of scientific instruments of the Renaissance.
By observing the movement of the star Kochab (in Ursa Minor) around the North Star, this astronomical instrument allows for determining the time at night in the Northern Hemisphere.
A historical and functional replica that recreates the Renaissance method of telling time through constellations.
