Reproduction of the oldest known nautical chart, of Portuguese origin, in Mercator projection, by José da Costa Miranda.
In a 1796 royal decree, he was described as "...the only person in this kingdom who knew how to make sea charts...". The Maritime Museum holds two magnificent illuminated parchments by him, representing the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
