Towards Revolution: The Final Months of the Estado Novo

Towards Revolution: The Final Months of the Estado Novo

What happened in Portugal in the three months leading up to the 1974 revolution?

The authors consulted hundreds of documents from national and foreign archives to draw a detailed picture of the events that led to the fall of the dictatorship.

In this book, we can see that, just months before April 25th, Portugal was desperately trying to buy weapons to maintain the conflict in Africa. On the home front, the military was conspiring against the government, and the book Portugal e o Futuro (Portugal and the Future), written by General Spínola and published in February 1974, caused a real political earthquake by denouncing the regime's failure to solve the problem of the Overseas Territories.

When Salgueiro Maia's troops arrived at Carmo barracks on April 25th, it wasn't long before the coup was consummated and Marcello Caetano handed over power to General Spínola.
