Safety Onboard Ships
Safety Onboard Ships
A unique book, dedicated to the Safety of Human Life at Sea, covering the Merchant Navy, Fishing Navy, and Recreational Navy, entirely written by an Officer of the Portuguese Merchant Navy. A safety manual, with 580 pages, updated with the latest international IMO directives, such as the Polar Code and guidelines on how to face the COVID-19 pandemic on board ships.
For the first time, the book includes a chapter dedicated to safety on fishing vessels, as well as a chapter dedicated to safety for the embarkation and disembarkation of ships by Bar Pilots.
About the author
From early on, in the field of maritime and port activity, safety was the fundamental concern of his professional career. He wrote several articles on the subject and, in 1998, he wrote the 1st Edition of the book presented here. In this way, he made every effort to ensure that accidents on board ships and in ports were nothing more than an exceptional event, which, despite the energy expended, he was not always able to achieve. Men at sea continue to be victims of accidents and die in the performance of their duties.
Safety is not, unfortunately, the result of simple will, but rather the result of the prudent actions of each team member and the entire team as a whole.
For there to be safety, training, experience, risk assessment, safe practices, and, above all, prevention are necessary. This is how the 2nd Edition of this work came about, the result of careful research on the subject, associated with varied professional experience and close contact with international safety regulations on board ships, stemming from the rapid changes that have occurred in this context, making its update inevitable to meet current requirements.
